Tinder and Bumble Struggle as Young Women Leave Dating Apps: Financial Times Report

The world's biggest dating apps Tinder and Bumble are facing a slowdown in their monthly user numbers, according to the Financial Times business newspaper. The decline has been particularly noticeable among young women.

Tinder's decline began in 2021, with Bumble following suit in 2023, as reported by the Financial Times (source). Tinder saw its monthly users drop below 60 million for the first time last quarter, while Bumble has around 20 million monthly users. However, Hinge and Grindr have not experienced the same decline.

Studies cited by the business newspaper indicate that young women are the demographic most likely to leave the apps. A survey conducted by Bumble found that 70% of women have experienced or are currently experiencing "dating app burnout." In response, the companies behind Match Group and Bumble are introducing new features to entice young female users back to their platforms. According to research agency Mintel, in the UK last year, 47% of men aged 18-34 used a dating app compared to only 25% of women.

The decrease in female users means that heterosexual men have fewer chances of matching on the platform, while women are more likely to have multiple matches. This imbalance ultimately affects the overall user experience.
