SIDN Explores Offering Custom Top-Level Domains for Dutch Cities and Companies in Collaboration with Dotlocal

1 year ago 22016

The Netherlands Internet Domain Registration Foundation is exploring the possibility of offering cities and regions their own top-level domain. SIDN will collaborate with a commercial entity to manage applications for TLDs for municipalities, cities, and businesses, pending approval from ICANN.

SIDN stated that in the foreseeable future, it will be feasible to establish a TLD for a city, region, or enterprise online. SIDN anticipates that this will be achievable by 2024 when it becomes possible. While SIDN has prior experience with localized domain extensions such as .frl for Frisian domains and the .amsterdam domain, they aim to streamline the process for other cities and regions to apply for domains like .tilburg or .brabant.

SIDN is gearing up for a new phase when the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) reopens the opportunity for new TLDs. ICANN is the governing body that authorizes TLDs, operating within specific windows for domain requests. This year, a window for new TLD applications will open, enabling interested parties to apply for unique domains.

With the impending window for new TLDs, SIDN is proactively assisting companies in preparing for the application process. The foundation has partnered with Dotlocal, a commercial entity involved in the management of the .frl domain. Municipalities, regions, and cities keen on acquiring their own TLD can submit applications before August 1 of this year. Additionally, businesses can secure their personalized domain, with SIDN citing .klm as a potential example.

By leveraging this upcoming opportunity, SIDN aims to empower local entities with the ability to establish their unique online presence through customized top-level domains. This initiative underscores the foundation's commitment to promoting digital innovation and enhancing the digital identities of cities, regions, and businesses in the Netherlands.
