Microsoft Introduces Passkey Support for Consumer Accounts, Leading the Way in Passwordless Login Options

Microsoft has recently announced the addition of passkey support to consumer accounts, making it one of the largest services to offer passwordless login options. Users now have the ability to log in using their face, finger, PIN, or security key.

According to a support page on Microsoft's website, users will soon be able to create a passkey for their personal Microsoft account. Passkeys eliminate the need for passwords by creating a key pair that is tied to both a physical device and the account. This innovative login method was previously discussed in a detailed article on Tweakers. Microsoft states that users can set up their own passkey and secure it using a facial scan, fingerprint, PIN code, or physical security key - the same security methods used by Windows Hello for logging into local Windows PCs. This functionality will also be extended to local devices and online accounts in the future.

The passkey login feature is applicable to various Microsoft apps and websites, including Microsoft 365 and Copilot. However, support for passkeys on mobile versions of applications will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
