The European Commission has reached out to several major platforms, including Google Search, TikTok, and Instagram, with a request for information. The Commission is seeking details on how these platforms address the risks associated with generative AI, such as the proliferation of fake images and misinformation.

These information requests were submitted in accordance with the Digital Services Act. Requests were sent to Bing, Facebook, Google Search, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and others, as indicated by the EC on Thursday. The Commission is particularly interested in the steps taken by these platforms to combat the spread of deepfakes.

In addition, the Commission is asking for access to 'information and internal documents related to risk assessments and strategies for mitigating the impact of generative AI on various electoral processes.' This includes the creation and dissemination of AI-generated content, the EC explains.

Following Easter, the Commission plans to conduct a series of stress tests to evaluate how well these platforms are equipped to handle disinformation campaigns leading up to the European parliamentary elections in June. In order to prepare for questions regarding disinformation prevention around the elections, the companies in question must submit the requested information to the Commission by April 5th.
