Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, has recently acquired the chat app Beeper. Beeper gained popularity for its unique feature of supporting Apple iMessage on Android devices. The goal now is to combine Beeper with Texts.com, another app acquired by Automattic last year, to form a universal chat app under the Automattic brand.

The merger of Beeper and Texts.com into a single app was announced by Automattic. Beeper, which currently boasts 115,000 users, has granted access to all individuals on its waiting list. Although there were 450,000 names on the waiting list, it is uncertain how many of them will actually utilize the app.

The upcoming app will be built on the chat protocol Matrix, promising increased security compared to Beeper's current offerings. Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Beeper and former creator of the Pebble smartwatch brand, has taken on the role of head of messaging services at Automattic. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed by the companies.

Beeper gained recognition for its efforts to integrate Apple iMessage into its universal chat client. While there were successful attempts, Apple eventually blocked them, leading Beeper to abandon the endeavor.
